The type of skewer you require will largely depend on the bike you are riding, if you have rim brakes for example - you will need a quick release skewer, and if you have a modern disc brake bike - you will require a thru axle skewer. There are also different diameters and widths of skewers, with many downhill bikes having a thicker and stronger skewer - because they need to be more durable than a skewer on a road bike, for example.
