There are some great days cycling to be had during the winter months on the roads, and for those who do not mind braving the winter conditions - a fitter start to the cycling season awaits as the weather improves. Many cyclists choose to purchase a cheaper road bike for winter riding - choosing to put the hard miles in on a less exotic and less expensive road bike compared to the one they use in the good weather months.

The cycling tyre industry has created a range of winter road bike tyres that have been designed to not only offer better performance in rainy and wet conditions, but are also tough enough to deal with roads in a poor winter condition, with increased potholes and debris washed into the road. Tyre tread patterns follow much the same design that wet weather car tyres do - with grooves in the tread of the tyre to displace water and maintain grip levels.

Winter road bike tyres also use harder compounds, which provide greater puncture protection. Many winter road bike tyres use kevlar, the material used in bulletproof vests - to provide a layer of protection between the inner tube of the bike and the debris from the road, although many winter cyclists choose to run a tubeless setup.
