Although many shops and retailers call a chainset a crankset - there are a couple of small differences between the two. A crankset just refers to the crank arm, and a chainset includes the crank arm as well as chainrings. At Westbrook, typically when we discuss chainsets we are referring to two crank arms alongside both a chainring and a bottom bracket.
A chainset is a vital part of the drivetrain of a bike, connecting the chain to the rear wheel of the bike - which is the drive wheel. Once the chain moves via the pedals, the chainset moves in a clockwise direction and the bike makes forward progress. The importance of the component, and the high stress environment it functions in on a mountain bike, means that every chainset has to be expertly engineered and built to last.
Because of the importance of the component, the chainset is often one of the first components which customers choose to upgrade on their mountain bikes - with aluminium and carbon chainset options being amongst the most popular.
Some of the most popular mountain bike chainsets include single ring chainsets, which have just one chainring as well as a cassette and derailleur at the rear of the bike - a chain device is also often used to keep the chain switching between gears well, whilst preventing the chain from slipping off. An increasingly popular mountain bike chainset is also known as double & bash - which is the same configuration as a triple chainset, but the third chainset has been replaced by a guard, which protects the gearing from knocks and bangs from aggressive mountain biking.
