The primary purpose of a cycling helmet is to protect the head incase of impact, but - thanks to clever and aerodynamic designs some cycling helmets, such as time trial helmets also have another purpose thanks to clever aerodynamic design. Time Trial Helmets for example, are a key part of a Time Trial, or Triathlete rider’s kit bag - being the number one weapon in the fight for a more aerodynamic riding profile.

The very first aerodynamic time trial helmets appeared back in the 1980’s - but as with anything which initially looks extreme, they were only adopted by a handful of athletes. During the 1989 Tour de France, Greg Lamond wearing an aerodynamic time trial helmet gained 58 seconds over his closest competitor - which made racing teams, cyclists and helmet manufacturers alike - realise the potential and benefits of an aerodynamic design.

During the 1990’s - helmets were designed to be aerodynamic - but not actually to protect the head in case of impact. In 2003 however, the UCI made it a rule that any race helmet which was worn must protect the riders head, leading to helmet manufacturers began adding polystyrene inserts into the helmet.

Today, a number of different brands go to great lengths to work out the precise aerodynamic nature of their helmets - and the designs of Time Trial and Aero helmets are under almost constant review. Many of the designs pioneered in this segment, The result is quite simple, a rider wearing a time trial helmet will ride faster than somebody wearing a standard road helmet. This means that a Time Trial Helmet can gain you massive advantage in regards to race position and personal best timings - and although the cost of these helmets can be a lot - it’s one of the cheapest race setup upgrades you can make.

At Westbrook, we stock and supply an excellent range of Time Trial Helmets - which have been handpicked from the leading names in the helmet industry. The two most popular brands that we supply are Kask Time Trial Helmets and Scott Time Trial Helmets. These helmets are available with a range of accessories and visors.
