Road Bike Price Ranges

£500 - £1000

At Westbrook Cycles, we speak to customers both over the phone and in our North Yorkshire shop - and one of the most common budgets we hear customers wanting to stick to for a new road bike is £1,000. There’s a few reasons for this, one of the main reasons is that a £1000 is the cycle to work budget limit, and another is that £1,000 is certainly a milestone in a lot of customers' minds.

The good news is that there is a massive range of road bikes available between £500-£1000. The £1000 price point itself is pretty high, and at this price range you may be able to stretch to a carbon framed road bike - although at this price range, we would choose an aluminium framed road bike with a very high specification over a carbon frame. Other considerations at this price range include groupset standard, and race bias groupsets are available at this price bracket.

With so many different sub £1k road bikes to choose from - the biggest considerations to make are what you use the bike for. If you are looking for a bike to gently ride and cruise along on, look for a comfort bias geometry and design, with an upright seating position for comfort. If you are looking for a race bias road bike, look for a race bias geometry - and if you are looking for a road bike for the daily commute and regular use, look for mudguard mounting points and pannier rack mounts.

At this price point, you can expect to see disc brakes fitted to a road bike - although some diehard road bikers do not like disc brakes being featured on a road bike, for us at Westbrook Cycles, we believe the small weight gain of having disc brakes on a bike is well worth it, thanks to increased stopping power and all weather performance.

One of the biggest things to consider here, is the two main ways that bikes at this price point are built and designed. Between £500 & £1000 you can choose between an advanced frame - with cheaper components, or a more basic frame with more expensive components. Cyclists who want to upgrade their components as time goes on should choose the better frame, but for cyclists who want to just jump on their road bike and go - we recommend choosing a bike with better spec on their components.

£1000 - £2000

At Westbrook Cycles, we stock and supply a massive range of road bikes which have been designed and manufactured by the world’s leading road bike brands. Road bikes are available at a massive array of price points, and quality road bikes can be purchased from as little as under £500, and the most advanced and expensive models available can cost over £10,000.

One of the most common price points we encounter from customers looking to buy a road bike, is a budget of anywhere between £1,000 and £2,000. This price point opens the road bike market up massively - so it’s a case of prioritising what you want most from your new road bike, and also what materials and specification you want.

At this price point, many cyclists will be looking for a carbon fibre frame - or an aluminium frame which has a very high component specification. Components and brakes will either be a disc brake or a high quality rim brake, such as the Shimano Ultegra. At this price point however, the wheels of the road bike will usually be the first component to let the bikes standards down, so it can be worth keeping some cash in reserve to upgrade the wheels at a future date.

On the plus side, at these sort of price points - you can expect manufacturers to have designed the bike in the lightest possible way, and the bike you are buying at this price point will provide you with a fantastic performance, which when looked after correctly - will provide you with years of reliable and enjoyable use.

The main choice between road bikes at this price range, is the distinct difference between race bias road bikes and endurance bikes. Although all road bikes are designed to travel at higher speeds, race bias bikes are designed to travel quicker - and the geometry of a race bike will encompass steep angles on the frame, allowing the rider to ride in the most aerodynamic possible position. Endurance bikes feature more relaxed geometry, allowing the rider to sit and ride in a more upright, more comfortable position.
