Mountain Bike Rims

At Westbrook Cycles, we stock and supply a massive range of mountain bike rims and wheels. These wheels are purchased by customers who are looking to replace broken wheels and rims, as well as by customers who are looking to upgrade the rims on their mountain bike.

Almost all Mountain Bike Rims that are fitted to mountain bikes, or purchased aftermarket - are made from aluminium - with only the highest specification rims being made from carbon fibre. It’s really important when choosing new rims for your mountain bike, that you choose a rim that is fit for purpose - lightweight rims designed for cross country mountain biking will not be able to stand up to the rigours of downhill trails, and downhill rims and wheels will not feel great when cycling cross country.

One of the biggest improvements mountain bikers can benefit from when changing their rims, is choosing a lighter rim which carries less weight - this means that each pedal translates to better acceleration and a higher top speed - this however, is only really a benefit for those riding cross country and racing.

Other things to consider include Rim Diameter, Rim Width and the number of Spokes fitted to the rim. Mountain Bike Rims are available in 26’’, 27.5’’ and 29’’ sizes. The choice of wheel sizes will depend on your bike, and the size of wheels that the bike can take. There’s also a number of different rim widths you can choose. 23mm is the usual standard for cross country and trail riding, but those heading across downhill trails may choose rims which are between 36-40mm wide to accommodate more robust tyres. Downhill wheels and rims will also have more spokes, and be heavier than cross country wheels.
