Although sometimes overlooked by some customers, who favour the look and feel of full suspension bikes - hardtail bikes remain a powerful choice for both newbie bikers and experts alike.

A hardtail mountain bike is best described as a great all-around bike, that has no rear suspension - and instead has either rigid forks or front suspension forks. Although rigid hardtail bikes are available, almost all mountain bikers choose to enjoy the advantages of having front suspension forks.

As these bikes only have front suspension, they are mostly cheaper than full suspension bikes - making them a popular choice as an entry level bike, as well as the perfect choice for mountain bikers who want to cover greater ground. The advantage that hardtail bikes hold over full suspension bikes for those wanting to put the miles in, is that no pedal energy is lost in the bogging up & down of the rear suspension - so each pedal equals maximum progress across the ground. Alongside being easier and quicker than a full suspension bike to ride - hardtail bikes are also much easier to look after and clean than full suspension bikes.

Climbing towards the higher end of the range, hardtail bikes up to and around a thousand pound provide a much better riding experience than full suspension bikes at or under the thousand-pound mark - as budget full suspension bikes provide inferior levels of performance compared to a quality hardtail bike. Mid-range and higher end hardtail mountain bikes are popular choices for advanced riders too, with many riders choosing to ride a hardtail to enjoy the purest mountain biking experiences of all, with no suspension to soak up bumps and smooth out trails and tracks - hardtail biking when ridden on trails are more demanding of the rider, but are incredibly rewarding to ride.

Depending upon budget, hardtail bikes are manufactured using a number of different materials for the frame. Steel was always the traditional choice of frame material for mountain bikes, simply because of its strength and toughness - it;’s used less and less today with most hardtail frames being made out of lighter aluminium. The use of aluminium provides a strong frame, but also a lighter frame, which equals better weight transfer and stiffness. At the top end of the hardtail mountain bike range, there are carbon fibre framed hardtails. Carbon Fibre is the lightest and strongest material available for mountain bike frames and is favoured by the world’s mountain biking elite.

At Westbrook Cycles, we have worked hard to source what is in our opinion, the best range of hardtail mountain bikes available online. Working with the very best in mountain bike brands, such as GT, Cannondale, Scott and GT Bicycles - the range encompasses the perfect mountain bike for every activity, capability level and budget.
