Rudy Project Wingdream Helmet Review
The Rudy Project WingDream TT Helmet has been developed in conjunction with Team Bahrain Victorious. It’s Rudy’s most aerodynamic, fastest and most impressive helmet; it’s been designed not only in wind tunnels, but also in the real world. This high end aero helmet is seriously impressive and is incredibly popular. In this post, we provide a detailed review of the Rudy Wingdream Helmet, and why it deserves a place in your arsenal.
Rudy Project Wingdream Features
As you would expect with a helmet, which looks as good as this - there are several unique features which have been integrated into this package, to provide maximum comfort, aero performance and safety, in this section - we run through a few of these features.
Aerodynamic Performance
Not surprisingly, the Wingdream has been designed to be Aero above anything else. The helmet features a teardrop shape, and every surface has been designed to be smooth - minimising wind resistance and drag. The helmet is an excellent choice for riders seeking to optimise their TT or triathlon performance. As well as being designed to cut through the air, the helmet is designed with Rudy’s own proprietary dynamic flow system, which as well as optimising airflow - also reduces wind turbulence around the head, increasing comfort levels.
Compared to alternative helmets like the Giro Aerohead or the Kask Bambino, the Wingdream provides greater aerodynamic performance, whilst maintaining comfort and ventilation - which we will look at below.
Comfort
Whilst aerodynamic performance is key, in long-distance events - helmets need to be comfortable enough to wear without causing any issues, discomfort can easily impact performance, especially if you need to stop a ride to adjust your helmet into a more comfortable position. Thankfully, the Wingdream is fitted with an adjustable retention system that always provides a precise and secure fit. The padding on the helmet is extremely comfortable and is made from antimicrobial materials, which reduces odours and increases hygiene levels.
When compared to the POC Ventral or the Smith Podium TT helmet, the Wingdream offers enhanced adjustability and comfort levels, allowing riders to customize the fit to suit their own head shape thanks to the adjustability, makes a real difference in real world prolonged use, reducing hotspots or pressure points, hopefully making you quicker and more comfortable on the bike.
Weight
The weight of a helmet can significantly affect performance. At just 280 grams, the Wingdream is one of the lightest helmets in its category. This weight saving performance is achieved without sacrificing aero performance or safety. While the Wingdream compares closely with the Kask Utopia or the Specialized Evade II in terms of weight, it holds a strong position when it comes to enhanced aerodynamic performance for its weight.
Ventilation
One of the helmet's standout features is its improved ventilation system. The Wingdream focuses on one single Vent, which provides flow through ventilation, and a 3D airframe band, which helps heat and sweat escape from the helmet. This ensures consistent airflow through the helmet, keeping the rider cool even on gruelling climbs or during summer training sessions. Having used this helmet in pretty warm riding conditions, it does a great job of keeping the head ventilated, whilst maintaining its aero performance.
This area is where the Wingdream pulls ahead of stiff competitors like the Giro Aerohead, which has famously limited ventilation. While other brands tend to sacrifice airflow for aero performance, Rudy Project balances between the two aspects really well.
Safety
The Wingdream was built with safety in mind. It comes with multi-directional impact protection (MIPS) technology, designed to reduce rotational forces during an impact. Additionally, the helmet meets stringent CPSC and EN 1078 standards for cycling helmets, so again, its performance biased design does not sacrifice on any safety and protection levels.
Rudy Project Wingdream vs. Giro Aerohead
The Giro Aerohead is a popular TT helmet, and it provides strong aerodynamic design and performance, but it lacks the breathable design that the Wingdream provides for riders, a key factor in keeping them cool and performing well.
Rudy Project Wingdream vs. Specialized Evade II
The Specialized Evade II delivers excellent ventilation, rivaling the Wingdream. However, the Wingdream’s superior aerodynamic design tips the scales for riders who want the ultimate in aero performance.
Rudy Project Wingdream vs. Smith Podium TT
The Smith Podium TT is slightly lighter, but it compromises on comfort and adjustability when compared to the wingdream.
