Guide To Cleaning Your Mountain Bike Forks

If you’re an avid mountain biker, you know how important it is to keep your bike in top shape. This includes not only the visible parts like the frame and wheels, but also the parts that have moving parts, much of which is hidden from view—like your forks. Your bike forks are a crucial component in your bike’s suspension on both full suspension bikes and hardtails, so it’s important to keep them clean and in good working order.

Remove Your Front Wheel

Before you begin cleaning your forks, it’s important to remove your front wheel to get better access to the forks. Simply lift your bike onto its back wheel, and carefully remove the front wheel. Make sure to unscrew the quick-release skewer, and remove it from the hub, so that the wheel can come off easily. Once the wheel is off, place it aside to clean it later.

Soak A Sponge In Hot Soapy Water

The first step in cleaning your mountain bike forks is to soak a sponge in hot soapy water. Use a mild detergent, like mountain bike shampoo, and make sure the water is hot enough to break down any dirt or grease on the forks. Once your sponge is soaked, use it to clean the exterior of the forks, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies.

Clean The Crown And Steerer Tube

Next, you’ll want to focus on cleaning the crown and steerer tube of your forks. These areas are crucial in keeping your forks functioning properly, so it’s important to clean them thoroughly. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean inside the steer tube, and around the crown and lower legs. Be careful not to scratch the fork, and avoid using abrasive materials. Specialist bike brushes are a safe bet here.

Dry The Forks Thoroughly

After you’ve finished cleaning your mountain bike forks, it’s important to dry them thoroughly to prevent any rust or corrosion from forming. Use a clean, dry towel to wipe down the forks, and make sure they’re completely dry before reattaching them to your bike. You can also use a hair dryer on low heat to help speed up the drying process.

Reattach Your Front Wheel

Once your mountain bike forks are clean and dry, it’s time to reattach your front wheel. Simply slide the wheel back onto the fork, making sure the skewer is properly aligned. Tighten the skewer by turning the lever clockwise, and then give the wheel a spin to make sure it’s properly secured. Periodically, it’s a good idea to service your mountain bike forks as per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
