Downhill Mountain Bike FAQs

Do I really need a downhill mountain bike?

This is a question that we are getting asked more and more frequently, mainly due to the rise of extremely capable enduro bikes. It’s true that most riders would be more suited to an enduro bike, with the focussed and aggressive nature of downhill mountain bikes - meaning that their design and performance is too much for most riders. However, if you plan on racing downhill, or take trips to riding areas with chair lifts - then choose your laser focussed downhill bike!

Can you ride a downhill bike on the road?

Although some suspension locks out, it’s not a great idea to be riding a downhill mountain bike on the road. There are other mountain bikes, such as hardtail mountain bikes which are better suited for riding both on road and off road, including commuting.

What’s better for most riders, downhill or enduro?

Enduro bikes are better for riders looking for all mountain performance, whilst downhill bikes are best for riders either competing downhill, or riding almost exclusively downhill on trails. Enduro bikes can do most of what a downhill bike can do, as well as so much more when it comes to cross country performance.

Do you need a full face helmet for downhill MTB?

A full face helmet is recommended for downhill mountain bike riding. These full face helmets offer incredible levels of protection, protecting not only the head, but also the entire face and the chin - including your teeth! They can get a little warm for cross country riding, but are essential for downhill riding.

Are downhill mountain bikes fast?

Competitive downhill riders certainly are! Averaging between 17-20 miles per hour in their racing.

Are downhill mountain bikes OK for everything?

Downhill mountain bikes are incredibly specialist, so do not expect strong performance on anything other than heading downhill, fast!
