The Wheel Rim is one of the most important components of any bike, be that a mountain bike, BMX or road bike. The rim is the piece of aluminum or carbon fibre, shaped in a hoop which your tyre is attached to. The rim is a key piece of safety equipment, and alongside being responsible for your bike staying upright, the rim also plays an important part in the speed which your bike carries, as well as it’s resilience against bumps and impacts off road.

Not surprisingly, there’s a raft of differences between road bike wheels and rims and mountain bike rims and wheels. Road bikes perform best on stiff and lightweight rims which reduce the rotational weight of the bike - helping you achieve higher speeds for less pedalling. Mountain Bike wheels and rims, especially those used for downhill mountain biking are wider and stronger than road bike rims - and they have been designed to take a lot of punishment without buckling.
