Although there is nothing stopping you from riding a mountain bike in whatever clothes you want, a good set of MTB shorts has a lot of advantages. For people riding XC bikes, quite often a set of Lycra shorts as seen worn by road riders will be the best option as they are lightweight and very flexible, allowing for maximum pedalling efficiency. The thin material helps to keep you cool when working hard and the padded chamois is designed to keep you comfortable in the saddle. For those who prefer to ride a trail bike or enduro bike, the fashion is to wear MTB baggy shorts, which often include pockets which are ideal for a multi tool or a car key. These baggy shorts are usually worn over the top of some padded shorts, either in the form of a standard pair of cycling shorts/bibshorts or some MTB liner shorts. These liners are similar to normal cycling shorts, including a chamois pad, but as they are only intended to be worn underneath other garments they often have an extremely lightweight construction such as a mesh fabric to allow for maximum breathability.
