Above is the collection of Surly Preamble bikes we have available at Westbrook Cycles. The Preamble, as with all Surly bikes, is pretty difficult to categorise, and it certainly shares some similarities with other models in the line-up. The Surly Preamble is made from their “Natch” chromoly steel tubing, making it durable and hardwearing, it has multiple mounting points for racks and bottles, and has large tyre clearance, allowing not only larger volume tyres, but also mudguards.

The difference between the Surly Preamble and other bikes in the Surly stable is that a lot of these features have been slimmed down or reduced. The tubing, for example, is thinner than models like the Surly Bridge Club, which makes the frame lighter, and more aimed at road riding. There are fewer barnacles, so only the necessary ones remain; keeping the cost and weight down and ensuring that handling is kept crisp and responsive, even when loaded. Wheel size on the Surly Preamble is also different depending on the frame size, so the x-small and small sizes are designed around a 650b wheel and the medium and larger are designed for a 700c wheel. This allows the ride feel to be perfect no matter how tall you are, and it allows tyre size to go up to 45mm on any size frame.

As mentioned previously, the Surly Preamble is difficult to categorise, but if we had to, we’d say it was a road bike or hybrid bike that represents an excellent entry point into the Surly bikes family, but veterans of their brand will love it too.
