At Westbrook Cycles, we stock and supply an excellent range of Hardtail Mountain Bikes - which we have sourced from the world's best mountain bike brands, such as Scott, Giant and Cannondale. These hardtail mountain bikes typically have front suspension forks, providing short to mid range levels of travel, which is often adjustable. There is no rear suspension on these bikes, with a solid frame, which is usually constructed from lightweight carbon fibre or alloy.
Hardtail Mountain Bikes are cheaper to purchase than full suspension bikes, but still provide plenty of fun and a great performance across varying terrain. Thanks to the fact that they have a cheaper price point, hardtail mountain bikes are often the preferred entry level mountain bike for many, with a lot of riders starting out on a hardtail mountain bike - before moving up to a full suspension mountain bike.
Although hardtail mountain bikes can be seen as an entry level mountain bike for many, the specifications and costs of some hardtail mountain bikes can easily exceed many full suspension bikes. Many high level mountain bikers choose hardtail mountain bikes because of their massive efficiency, when riding a hardtail mountain bike - there is no energy lost when pedalling through the rear shock, meaning quicker and more efficient progress. Many hardtail bikes do not struggle with downhill trails either, with the rider more often being the constraining performance factor compared to the bike itself. High end hardtail mountain bikes are hugely capable machines.
There are other reasons why many want to ride a hardtail mountain bike, for those who rode during the 1980s and 1990’s - those who enjoyed the pure performance and responsiveness of a hardtail mountain bike will enjoy the performance and geometry of new models. Riding hardtail mountain bikes is a more involved and thought out process VS riding a full suspension mountain bike, the rider needs to think more about their lines and terrain crossed.
The most common type of hardtail mountain bike, is a cross country mountain bike - the geometry of which has been designed to cross various terrain, in the quickest possible way. Thin tyres, suspension travel of 75-100mm and a high gear range allows great cross country performance. Although these bikes can tackle a range of downhill terrain, they are more suited to the full spectrum of off-road performance.
Enduro Hardtail Mountain Bikes have been designed to provide greater downhill mountain bike performance. Great suspension travel of between 140-170mm is twinned with a bike with a longer wheelbase and a more aggressive geometry for maximum aggression when riding.
There are also a range of electric hardtail mountain bikes available - which use electric motors to provide assistance when pedalling. These bikes, when twinned with a hardtail mountain bike frame - mean that incredible levels of off road pace can be achieved.
