Those familiar with all things two wheeled, will probably already know that BMX stands for ‘Bicycle Motocross’ with the BMX bike being born in the 1970’s, as the youth in particular began racing BMX bikes much in the same way that Motocross Bikes are raced, over jumps and obstacles.
As this type of racing grew in popularity, a new style of bike was created in response. From humble beginnings, BMX racing and events are now featured in the olympics - and freestyle BMX riders and teams compete at incredibly high level events, such as the Red Bull X Games.
At Westbrook Cycles, we are proud to source and supply a fantastic range of BMX bikes to our customers, all of which can benefit from our handpicked range of BMX’s - chosen from the world’s leading BMX and bike brands.
To fully understand which BMX is right for you, it’s important to understand a few of the different BMX disciplines - in order to understand how BMX bikes differ from one another, whilst ensuring you make the right choice for your riding style and preferences.
Freestyle BMX bikes represent the most versatile choice for any rider which wants to ride, do tricks and get creative with urban features, as well as ramps and jumps found in skateparks. Freestyle BMX bikes are also the right choice for riders looking to perform flatland tricks and dirt trails. Freestyle BMX bikes typically have chunkier tyres, which have been designed to take the punishment and impacts of tricks.
Race BMX bikes are an incredibly specialised style of BMX, making them largely unsuitable for freestyle use. These bikes are designed for maximum speed and handling, so are often build out of lighter materials. BMX racing takes place across a range of purpose built courses, which can be made from a wide range of hard packed materials, featuring long jumps, undulating courses and hard turns.
Although race and freestyle BMX bikes have some of the same instantly recognisable features, such as BMX handlebars - freestyle BMX bikes are almost always made from steel, whilst race BMX bikes are made from aluminium, for obvious weight saving reasons.
At Westbrook Cycles, we stock a wide range of BMX bikes in a range of fantastic designs, allowing our customers to enjoy the coolest BMX designs, alongside enjoying a fantastic ride. These BMX Bikes have been chosen from the world’s leading BMX manufacturers - including GT.
