26-inch wheels are one of the lightest mountain bike wheel choices because this is the smallest wheel size available - these wheels accelerate quickly and corner well. The next size up is 27.5-inch wheels, also known as 650b wheels. These wheels still handle well but offer improved traction and rolling of larger wheels. 29-inch wheels are the largest wheels available on a mountain bike, and the benefits of this large wheel size are two-fold, they provide more traction thanks to their more extensive profile, and they are better at rolling over bumpy ground than smaller wheel sizes.

As well as different wheel sizes, a choice must be made between standard and tubeless rims. The benefits of choosing a tubeless rim almost always outweigh the reasons to choose a standard rim, mainly because of the reduced likelihood of a puncture that will halt a ride.
