A bicycle cassette is one of the most important parts of your bike’s transmission range of components. The cassette is fixed into the freehub body and is held in place with a lockring. One of the best ways to describe a cassette is a number of sprockets, which is located on the rear hub of your bike. Depending on the type of bike you have, including whether or not it’s a mountain bike or a road bike.

The number of sprockets on the cassette will vary, there can be as little as five sprockets, and there can be as many as thirteen sprockets. Recently, there has been an increase in the use of cassettes with 12 sprockets, especially in higher end grouspets, including SRAM.

In some cases, you can run a different brand cassette from other components in your drivetrain, with there being some compatibiltiy between SRAM and Shimano - assuming the spacing is the same between the sprockets.
